Kiva.org and You!

I was recently inspired to check out Kiva.org by Ed Kohler of TheDeets.com

Kiva is online service that enables you to help finance microloans to poor Entrepreneurs, primarily in poverty stricken countries.  These loans allow these people to start or expand their small businesses or farm that their livelyhood depends on.  Keep in mind that this isn’t a donation and that your money isn’t being consumed by overhead costs 100% of the amount you donate goes directly to the Entrepreneur.  You don’t receive any financial gain, interest, on the loan but after the person pays back the money your are then able to withdraw it or reloan it out to other individuals.  So instead of letting a few extra dollars gain you tenths of pennies in your account (or nothing at all) Let it spend a few months going to work helping someone half way around the globe buy an extra cow or something, and then you’ll still get your money back if you’d like it.

Here is a wonderful video explaining more of the process!
